So in my real life I work at a non profit that provides financial literacy education to the masses. Sounds thrilling doesn’t it? It’s ok, I know it doesn’t.
Today I had to go over to the local state university as a guest speaker for a personal finance class. The concept of being faced with a roomful of college students in daunting under the best of circumstances. Being faced with a roomful of college students who are listening to you extol the virtues of budgeting is downright heart stopping.
I prepared handouts, I wrote jokes, I dressed nicely. Apparently I dressed so nicely that the professor almost didn’t recognize me. I took a deep breath and dove in.
It was much like being in front of a firing line. Nobody smiled. They only laughed at two of my jokes. Unsurprisingly both involved beer.
I know it probably wasn’t as horrible as I felt it was, but man, 20 something year old kids are brutual.
